Pre-offer jitters and negotiation
08-25-06, 2:17 PM

Rapid emails exchanged, phone calls and conversations with the 'girl' and co-workers whom I could trust for advice regarding an offer began around 12 p.m.

The City called but wanted to contact my boss first prior to making an offer. I relunctantly agreed but stated I had to speak to him first because he was unaware of my job search. However, I found myself unsettled about this condition to an offer because I did not know the amount. What if it were too low?

I called back the HR person and left a message that I was uncomfortable about this situation because I feared reprecussions from my boss who is quite petty if there isn't anything in it for him or if a situation will place a burden upon him. I then offered other people with whom they could call to seek references and even offered phone numbers of Councilmen where I had projects. The HR Specialist conferred with her superiors and they agreed to make a contract proposal contigent upon a background check. She also let slip that they were going to offer a higher salary than the posted entry salary range.

Yet, I still have reservations about them contacting my current employer. My co-worker agreed and further testified that the person who formerly held my position had the very same difficulties even though my boss and she were and are good friends. Simply, he won't go to bat for her nor anyone.

I'm just a bunch of nerves right now!
